Winners of the Pride in Print Awards 2017 revealed

Auckland-based Logick Print & Graphics Ltd has carried off this year’s Pride In Print Supreme Award for a multi-faceted presentation box to showcase the “top tier” status of premium manuka honey. The Awards were celebrated on a glittering night at Christchurch’s Air Force Museum in Wigram recently. The True Honey Large & Small Presentation Case also won this year’s Packaging Category prize, for delivering just what premium products require — premium packaging.

Created for client True Honey, a beautiful black box opens in concertina fashion, with a jar of manuka honey firmly gripped within the folds. The box can then be refolded, so the case can continue to showcase the honey after the purchase is made, and take pride of place on pantry shelves. Not only is the packaging spectacular, the design is perfect for the export market in particular. The outer packaging is sealed, preventing anyone other than the buyer from touching the contents, and ensuring total product integrity while being posted or couriered.

Logick Principal Dave Gick said the firm was lucky to cater for clients who want something out of the ordinary. “Our reputation has been paved down that road for specialty and unique jobs. Sometimes with the jobs we take on, I am not even sure myself at the start if we can do it. That’s how much of a challenge it is.

“We are still developing techniques about how to get new results. When customers push us, we push ourselves.”

The night was a huge success, hosted by MCs Jeremy Corbett and Joe Bennett. Pride In Print chair Scott Porter and convenor of judges Simon Yendoll said the standard of entries was the highest in the awards’ 24-year history and this year’s entries highlight the impact the printed media has in every sector of New Zealand’s industries.

Outstanding designs

“Any bottle would stand out from any shelf with this label on it” – was the glowing endorsement from the Pride In Print judges for the Haha Brut Cuvee label, which won the Labels Category Award for North Shore printer Rapid Labels. The label is printed in gold on gunmetal foil with a satin varnish finish, and was created for the launch of the new HaHa bubbly.

Point-of-sale displays are soaring to a new level with astonishing examples of paper engineering that carried off the Sign and Display Print prize for Auckland company Production Partners.

Lion Nathan needed something out of the ordinary for their “Here’s to Interesting” campaign to promote their range of Mac’s ales, and Production Partners worked with APC Innovate to produce a stunning stand that features an animal head positioned above the beers on display. The head is made from thick card cut at precise angles and then folded to create a 3D effect for the faces of different animals.

Auckland company APC Innovate won for its Gift Trader exhibition stand that is made of fully-recyclable card. This design could change the way companies organise their exhibition planning in future. It comes as a flat pack and can be assembled in 30 minutes, either as a free-standing unit or by attaching panels to the wall with Velcro.

The stand is totally recyclable so once the exhibition is over, it can be discarded into the recycling bin or can be dismantled back to a flat pack and used again.

“The cost of hiring stands is high and people often have to use professional installers. This design reduces the cost enormously and you can do it yourself,” said a spokesperson.

More gold for Admark

There was a happy buzz at Admark as the team celebrated another highly successful year at the annual Pride in Print Awards. Four Gold medals and six Highly Commended awards have been added to the company’s trophy wall, making a total of more than 40 gold medals since the inception of the awards.

Laurie Pilling, Admark’s Managing Director, says “I’m very proud to say the work Admark enters into these awards is taken from our every-day print runs – there’s no special, extra-care ‘competition prints’ – which means my team are consistently going above and beyond to provide our clients technically excellent, award-winning work every day. I was also pleased to see that the medals we received were spread across our different printing technologies – digital, flexo and screen – which further reiterates that I have a very technically able team. ”

The four gold medals were awarded to Admark for a Sistema Moana inmould label; Sky Networks Descendants van wrap; ANZ ATM panels and Burger King’s Meatatarian backlit sign. Highly Commended awards were achieved for a Nikau Point wine label; another Sistema inmould label and four more Burger King backlit signs.
