Wholesale supply inquiry update from ComCom

Wholesale supply inquiry update from ComCom

The New Zealand Commerce Commission is carrying out an Inquiry into the wholesale supply of groceries to consider whether additional regulation should apply.

The First Annual Grocery Report showed that the wholesale regime is working for a small group of grocery retailers, but there are some fundamental issues in the wholesale market that cannot be addressed under the regime’s current settings.

This week, the Commission has published the cross-submissions they received on the Wholesale Supply Inquiry Preliminary Issues Paper.

The Commerce Commission has received four cross-submissions from:

•             Edgecumbe Supermarket Ltd;

•             Foodstuffs North & South Island;

•             New Zealand Food & Grocery Council; and

•             Woolworths New Zealand.

The Commission has also published an updated version of the submission received from Edgecumbe Supermarket Ltd.

The cross-submissions can be found on their webpage here.

While the consultation period for the Preliminary Issues paper has now ended, if you have any questions or comments on the Inquiry please contact the Commission on grocery.regulation@comcom.govt.nz with “Wholesale Supply Inquiry” in the subject line.

Please note there will also be further consultation on the draft report to be published in 2025.
