In a notable collaboration, Tesco and Zespri have launched a new kerbside recyclable packaging for Kiwifruit in the UK, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and moving away from traditional plastic wraps. The packaging, approved for individual kiwi packs, consists of a cartonboard tray from Smurfit Westrock and a linerless Fruit Lid, together forming a solution known as ‘ProProduce’ by ProPrint Group. This initiative is designed to eliminate the need for plastic flow wraps and is kerbside recyclable.
The redesigned packaging enhances the kiwi’s visual appeal with a vibrant design, featuring orange and yellow graphics and die-cut sections on the Fruit Lid to mirror Zespri’s logo. The use of Ravenwood Packaging’s Nobac 5000L linerless applicator, which applies Fruit Lids to trays without the need for backing paper, is expected to significantly lower CO2 emissions by reducing material use and waste.
This packaging solution not only aims to increase on-shelf appeal and facilitate recycling, but also supports the circular economy by cutting down on carbon footprint. It marks Tesco’s first shift to branded kiwi products in-store, supported by various trade marketing strategies. Additionally, Tesco has explored other sustainable packaging solutions, such as recyclable cardboard containers for avocados and laser etching for product information, while also facing challenges with packaging changes in other product lines.
Meanwhile, Aldi is also making strides in sustainable packaging by trialing paper bands for bananas and removing plastic punnets from its fruit and vegetable lines, aiming to significantly reduce plastic use across its stores.
