Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand is celebrating this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight (3-16 August) with all their FMCG partners as they spread the word about Fairtrade and how they’re working towards a fairer future for people and planet.
“For Fairtrade Fortnight 2022, our focus will be on the environment and the idea that fair pay means farmers can look after their families AND farm sustainably,” says Molly Harriss Olson, CEO of Fairtrade ANZ.
“Because the simple truth is, that often farmers in developing countries are paid low prices for their goods and that means they have to make tough choices. Even if they care about the long-term future of their land, feeding their families will always come first.
“For Fairtrade farmers, fair pay means the choices become easier. Having enough money for dinner and planting trees means that their farms will be sustainable in the long term and their families have what they need in the short term.
“And we know that shoppers care about trees – and the farmers – more than ever. They are also sophisticated about what they understand sustainability to be. Ten, even five years ago, if you talked about solar panels and cutting down plastics, then consumers trusted your green credentials. Now, they want to know about supply chains, transparency and climate change mitigation at origin.
“So, for Fairtrade Fortnight 2022, we will be proud to share the stories of our Fairtrade brands and the way their businesses help farmers – starting with paying them fairly but also through supporting them in their endeavours to farm sustainably, empower women and look after their communities,” says Olson.
