After four years of planning and a year of construction, Napier’s newest supermarket is about to open its doors, bringing shoppers a better supermarket experience and even greater savings. The new and improved PAK’nSAVE Tamatea, built right beside the old store (pictured) near the roundabout at York, Coventry and Leicester Avenues, will open on Tuesday, 29 November. Demolition of the old store will commence in the New Year for the development of additional carparks for the PAK’nSAVE store and further retail space.
Andrew Graney, Owner-Operator of PAK’nSAVE Tamatea, says it’s an exciting time for all his customers and staff. “For shoppers, we have 50% more retail space – at 3,250 square metres –allowing for a much wider range of products, and even greater everyday savings. For our team it’s the culmination of almost four years of planning and development. Many of them have been involved in the planning and design right from the outset, so it’s a real team effort and I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved so far.
“Overall the new store is bigger, brighter and better designed,” he says. “It means we can meet our shoppers’ current and future needs, and continue to bring them the country’s lowest food prices. It also has the latest in lighting and refrigeration technology, meaning greater energy efficiencies. We now have a dedicated seafood department separate to the delicatessen. What’s more, we have the latest in self-service checkouts, to save customers’ time, in addition to the popular SHOP’nGO service, which lets registered customers scan as they shop then simply pay at the end.”
Lindsay Rowles, GM Property Development, Foodstuffs North Island, says it brings the number of new stores the company has opened this Spring to three. “In September it was PAK’nSAVE Tauriko in Tauranga, then New World Te Kuiti in October. In total, the three stores have cost more than $50 million, and their geographic spread underscores our commitment to bringing modern supermarkets to all parts of the North Island.”
Graney adds that PAK’nSAVE Tamatea will continue to support the local community, not just through cost savings and jobs for 160 staff, but also through sponsorship of sport and other activities. “Over the recent winter season we helped around 75 junior sports teams with sponsorship, and we also have links to a number of the schools and other local groups and charities. As a locally owned and operated business it’s a vital part of who we are.”
