Harraways, New Zealand’s iconic oats company, is celebrating a big milestone, providing Kiwis with delicious oats for more than a century. The flour and oat mill that took the Harraways name has been milling grain on the original Green Island, Dunedin site for 150 years and remains privately owned.
Henry and Catherine Harraway were the first generation of Harraways to produce flour at this mill for the growing population of Dunedin, including their own 21 children! In 1893, Henry Harraway replaced stone grinding (powered by steam) with an oat roller milling plant and processed 1,000 tonnes of oatmeal in its first year. This heralded the commencement of breakfast cereal production for Harraways, however the production of flour also remained important to the company during the 1900’s.
Harraways still processes oats by traditional methods, giving their oats a distinctive flavour while retaining the “goodness of nature” in every pack.
To say thanks to Kiwis for their continuous support over the last 150 years, Harraways parked up a brightly decorated birthday caravan on Elliott Street in Auckland, where consumers could enjoy a delicious range of oat snacks and an invigorating coffee on them. They also had the chance to take home celebratory tea towels, plush ‘Harry’ (Harraways friendly Scottish Terrier) soft toys, fridge magnets and birthday product samples.
The eye-catching Harraways caravan were out in Auckland City earlier this week.
In celebration of this milestone, Harraways has released two new birthday flavours – Birthday Berry Bonanza and Chia, Coco
nut & Cranberry Celebration – with free collectables inside each pack.
These free collectables include colour-changing spoons and ‘Harry’ fridge magnets. These can be found in packs while stocks last. Within the month of May (at participating New World and Pak N Save stores) customers can also claim their FREE Harraways vintage oat tin when they buy any two Harraways Rolled Oats 800g or Scotch Oats 850g packs!
The Birthday Release Oats Singles Packs are available in New World and Pak N Save supermarkets throughout NZ and are line priced with all other Harraways Oat Singles Packs in these stores.
