Four Square Heaphy Terrace celebrated the completion of a two-year refurbishment with a special event for the community on Friday, 1 November, revealing a refreshed and improved store, custom-built for Heaphy Terrace locals.
Part of Foodstuffs North Island, the co-operative behind the North Island’s New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores, the store is owned and operated by Alex Saunders who has thoughtfully redesigned the store, with a focus on improving the flow and layout.
“When I took over as owner-operator in September of 2021, I made a commitment to invest in the store and the community of Fairfield,” Saunders says.
“In the space of two years we’ve completely transformed the store. It’s unrecognisable inside. We’ve got a food-to-go kiosk offering hot food, chicken and chips and barista made coffee. The aisles have been widened, we’ve got clearer signage and given everything a fresh coat of paint – all with the goal of making it as easy as possible for people to quickly find all their everyday essentials and grocery items.”
The revamped store has 600m2 of retail space, packed with 7,000 different products and a full offer across fresh produce, bakery, butchery and seafood.
Saunders has also invested heavily in energy efficiency, with new lighting and refrigeration to further reduce the store’s carbon footprint.
To commemorate the occasion, Four Square Heaphy threw a party on Friday, 1 November, with a 10% discount on most items.
“It’s been a challenge to make so many changes without disrupting our customers’ daily routines, but I couldn’t be happier with the results. I can’t wait to share them with the community.”
Four Square Heaphy Terrace originally opened as a New World in 1977, before being rebranded to a Four Square in 2012. This refurbishment is the biggest ever since it first opened 46 years ago.
It’s pretty amazing to see how far it’s come,” Saunders says.
“Everything inside has been replaced and improved to better suit the community.
“The timing couldn’t be more perfect either with Four Square celebrating its 100th birthday in July.”
The refurbishment has also created new opportunities for the community. The store has expanded its team from 15 to 25 employees over the past few years, with many team members living within walking distance.
“It’s been great to be able to offer jobs to locals,” says Saunders. “We’re proud to be a part of this community and to contribute to its growth.”
“We hope everyone loves the changes as much as we do. Over the coming months, I’m keen to hear more about what the community are looking for, to make Four Square Heaphy Terrace the best supermarket it can be.”
