Countdown’s much anticipated Newmarket store has officially opened as part of the final stage of construction in the Westfield Newmarket mall redevelopment.
Countdown Newmarket closed in January last year, and has undergone a massive makeover in a brand new space. New features include a new bakery with a flatbread machine, and an extended range of food and groceries including an expansive health food section.
Countdown Newmarket Store Manager, Tom Jones-Griffiths, who was also recently named Countdown’s Store Manager of the Year for 2019, says he and the team are very excited to open their doors and share the store with customers.
“We’ve been away from our Newmarket community for a long time and are incredibly excited to be back in an even better store that we know our customers are going to love.
“There’s been a big build up to the opening and the amount of effort that has gone into getting the store ready has been phenomenal,” says Jones-Griffiths.
“Since the old store closed last year, our team all temporarily shifted to other stores, so I know they’re itching to get going and settled back here in Newmarket. We’re also pleased to welcome our new team members as well, which we know will be important as we head into Christmas craziness.”
The new Newmarket supermarket is part of Countdown’s continued commitment to investing in communities around New Zealand. Last year Countdown invested more than $80 million into building new stores and upgrading its existing store network.
At the opening Countdown presented two $500 trolleys of groceries to its local food rescue partners, The Salvation Army and KiwiHarvest, who will collect donations of surplus food as part of Countdown’s national food rescue programme. Last year Countdown stores donated the equivalent of 10.4 million meals to New Zealanders in need.
