Community focused couple thrilled to call Nelson home

Mike and Kirsten Deuchrass are thrilled to call Nelson their new home and are embracing their new life as the new owner-operators of New World Nelson.

The pair, who have moved from New World Gore, are looking forward to bringing their community-focused approach to their new venture.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the relationships we built in Gore and are excited to forge new ones here in Nelson,” Mike says.

“We’ve loved our time in Southland, but we’re ready for a new challenge,” Kirsten says.

Mike spent much of his time after school and during the holidays working at New World Wanaka as a teenager. However, it was an opportunity to work at Pak’n’Save Wainoni in Christchurch, which created a desire to one day own and operate his own grocery business.

“New World Nelson is physically a similar size to Gore, but there is a much larger customer base. Supermarkets fundamentally work the same, but each one has intricacies to figure out, and while there’s lots to learn – we’re really looking forward to it.”

When asked about their plans, Mike and Kirsten are excited about exploring the region’s natural beauty. “We’ve always loved the outdoors,” Mike says. “Nelson offers so much, from beaches and rivers to mountains, and we can’t wait to explore it all with our kids.”

The couple is also committed to giving back to their community. Mike has a history of volunteering with the local fire department and is keen to continue that involvement in Tasman.

“We’re here for the long haul,” he says. “We’re excited to get involved and build strong connections with the locals.”
