National food education charity Garden to Table has launched a new initiative encouraging Kiwis to get off the couch and into the garden to grow their own fresh potatoes in time for summer.
In partnership with Tui Garden Products, the Great Potato Bag Fundraiser aims to teach Kiwi children and their families how to grow, harvest, prepare and share their homegrown spuds.
An easy crop to grow, the spud takes just two to three months to turn from seed to tasty tuber. This means its time to get planting in order to harvest a bumper crop of potatoes in time for summer.
Garden to Table ambassadors, famed celebrity chef Al Brown, nutritionist Niki Bezzant and landscape designer and gardening expert Dan MacKay, are all on board with the initiative.
Al has created a delicious potato recipe showing you how to take your spuds from garden to table, impressing guests to the table this sunny season. This recipe will be included in the Great Potato Bag Kit, which includes everything you need to grow your own crop including a brightly-coloured potato planter bag, 1.5kg pack of seed potatoes from Tui Garden Products and ‘how to’ growing guide for just $20.
Proceeds from the kits go to support the work of the Garden to Table Trust, which provides a curriculum-integrated food education programme to New Zealand primary and intermediate schools across the country.
Auckland quality grocer Farro Fresh is also supporting the cause and will be stocking the kits across their six Auckland stores. The kits are also promoted to members of Mitre 10’s Garden Club and are available online to purchase at gardentotable.org.nz.
