Hollywood legend Paul Newman was committed to helping make the world a better place.

“Let’s give it all away!” said Newman 35 years ago, when he decided to donate 100% of the profits from his premium salad dressings business, which he formed in 1982. Half a billion dollars have gone to deserving charities since then, including charities in New Zealand.

FMCG Business Editor Tamara Rubanowski felt honoured to be invited to lunch with the Newman’s Own team this week, to celebrate their milestone and reveal the 2017 recipients of the Newman’s Own Foundation grants. This year, charities such as StarJam, Dance Therapy, HeartKids and the Food Trust are among the beneficiaries of the independent, private Foundation.

A total of $225,000 USD in grants is available for New Zealand charities this year, announced Newman’s Own Foundation CEO and President, Robert Forrester at the Foundation event in Auckland, which was attended by many of the charity grant recipients.

A special $100,000 USD grant for disaster relief will go to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, to assist with providing air rescue/ambulance services to the Kaikoura/North Canterbury area after the devastating earthquake in November 2016 as road access to this area continues to be limited.

Sadly, Newman passed away in 2008, but the philanthropic work he cared so deeply about continues to this day. Newman’s Own Foundation is now led by Forrester and a Board of Trustees.

“What could be better than to hold your hand out to people who are less fortunate?” said Newman about his charity work.

Did you know?

Paul Newman’s Own was launched in New Zealand in 1992 and the Foundation has supported over 100 charitable causes here, including disaster relief grants following major earthquakes in the South Island.
