Greystone Wines has repeated its success with its trophy-winning single vineyard Thomas Brothers’ Reserve Pinot Noir. In the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards Greystones’ 2012 Brothers’ Reserve Pinot Noir won the Decanter International Trophy for best Pinot Noir in show. The 2015 Decanter Awards have just been announced and the Greystone 2013 Thomas Brothers’ Pinot Noir has again won the trophy for best Regional Pinot Noir. This is Greystone’s single vineyard Pinot Noir coming from its highest block on the limestone and clay slopes of Omihi.
“For a small winery such as ourselves the international acclaim has been incredible and priceless. Last year we had people calling up from all over the world to get hold of the wine and we’ve had to allocate this year’s release before it comes out on the 1st of July,” said Nik Mavromatis, Marketing Manager for Greystone.
Dom Maxwell, winemaker for Greystone, put it down to the combination of a great vintage in 2013 and the Brothers Block site high on their Omihi vineyard. “You have to stand up there and see the elevation, the exposed limestone,” he said. “Pinot Noir is our reason for being, so it’s very nice to be recognised for this.”
Now in its 12th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. Judged by the top wine experts from around the globe, the DWWA is trusted internationally for its rigorous judging process. Over 15,000 wines are entered and tasted in London across categories for price, varietal, country and style. The New Zealand panel was chaired by Cameron Douglas MS, who is also a regular contributor to the NZ National Liquor News pages in FMCG Business.
The judges described it as “a wine of notable presence and power, with a nose of cream, violets, red plums, red berries and dark cherry laced with oak spices. A deep, complex and huge, juicy palate fills the mouth with flavours of cinnamon-kissed red fruits, showing a silky mouthfeel and a long, attractive finish. An absolute star.”
