Futuristic biometric POS for C-store

Customers will be able to pay with a swipe of the hand, using new biometric POS technology at a new C-store launched by 7-Eleven in Korea.

Touted as the “C-store of the Future”, 7-Eleven launched the new concept store, dubbed ‘7-Eleven Signature’, in the Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea.

The new payment terminal scans palm vein patterns to identify customers that have registered for a Lotte card, to avoid the need for using cards, mobile phones, and other physical payment solutions.

The new store also boasts a 360-degree laser scanner that can read the barcodes on any item within range to calculate total cost, and display fridges that automatically open doors when it detects customers nearby.

Koreabizwire reported that the vein scanning technology has also been implemented in the store’s smart tobacco vending machine to prevent minors from purchasing cigarettes.

Korea Seven president Jung Seung-in said: “7-Eleven Signature, as a premium smart convenience store with a cutting-edge IT system suitable for the fourth industrial revolution, will be remembered as an innovative icon in Korea’s distribution industry.”
